SWIM...CAMERA...ACTION
September 2009

Sibford School near Banbury played host to a truly unusual event when scores of babies and toddlers dived into its swimming pool to take part in a nationwide advertising campaign.
The photoshoot, on behalf of Water Babies ~ the world’s largest baby swim school ~ saw children taking part in a number of activities underwater that would more normally take place on land. These included reading a book, dancing and riding a tricycle.
Explained Tamsin Brewis, who runs Water Babies locally: 'One of the benefits of the specialist way we teach our children to swim is that they quickly become supremely confident. When you consider that many of our children are swimming short distances by the age of two, it's not surprising, therefore, that they think nothing of sitting on a trike at the bottom of the pool by the age of three or four!”
Tamsin is quick to point out that, despite the unusual nature of the photoshoot, it was conducted well within the strictest of safety parameters.
“One of the beauties of our teaching is that we'll only ever get children to do what they want to do, so we know we're not pushing their boundaries. Despite the amazing photos, each child was only under water for a few seconds, and we had plenty of fully trained instructors on hand to make sure they were ok.”
Fiona Clarkson was thrilled to let her four-year-old daughter, Hannah, take part in the shoot. “People do not believe us when we tell them what we got up to,” she said. “Hannah really loved sitting on a tricycle under water."
Ali Bromhall, community development officer at Sibford School, who popped in to witness the strange events on the day, added: “It was absolutely amazing to watch. All the children were super confident in the water and they clearly loved every minute.
“We know Tamsin well, she uses our pool for Water Babies twice a week, so we had no doubt that, whatever she was planning to do, it would be done in the safest possible way.”
