Pupils at Sibford School near Banbury were given an insight into the making of an academy award-nominated film when they met actor Nasser Memarzia.

Nasser, who lives near Stratford, visited the school to discuss his role in Marc Foster’s ‘The Kite Runner’. Based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini, ‘The Kite Runner’ tells the story of two boys growing up in 1970s Afghanistan and covers the subsequent impact of the soviet invasion and the establishment of the Taliban regime.

Pupils were told how much of the film had to be shot in Kashgar, China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan. Nasser, who played the role of, Zaman, the orphanage director, also explained some of the challenges of adapting a book for the big screen.

Following the talk pupils were able to watch the film in cinema-style, thanks to a new projector and giant screen donated to the school by its Parents and Friends Association.

* Nasser Memarzia’s current project takes place much nearer to home … he is writer and director of the Cherwell Theatre Company’s production of Arabian Nights which starts a three-week run at the Mill Theatre, Banbury on January 14 2009.

Nasser Memarzia is pictured with Sibford pupils David Wells, 15, and Helen Thain, 16.
