PROMISES RAISE OVER £6,000

28 April 2008

Pupils at Sibford School, near Banbury, have raised a staggering £6,100 to help build a playground at an orphanage in Ghana.

The money was raised at an auction of promises that took place on Friday (25 April).

Items that came under the hammer included a rugby shirt signed by new England rugby manager Martin Johnson; a family ticket to Santa Pod Raceway; a case of House of Commons Whisky, a Venture Portrait Experience and a weekend away in a chauffeur-driven camper van.

The event was organised by members of the Sibford Challenge Team, a group of eight students and three members of staff who will be travelling to Ghana in June to do voluntary work.

As well as helping to build the playground, the team will also be taking on a number of other projects including teaching orphans and helping local villagers with sustainable agriculture.

Said staff member Emma Worlsey: “I can’t believe we did so well. It was a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank everyone who supported us by donating promises and by bidding for the lots.”

SILVER MILE MEANS PILES OF CASH

SIlver Mile

When you turn off the Tadmarton Road to head towards Sibford School, your destination is exactly 1 mile away. Cover that distance with five pence pieces and you'll need a staggering 90,000 coins or £4,500...which is precisely the amount that former pupils and friends of the school have collected. It was back in 2001, at a reunion of the Sibford Old Scholars Association, that it was decided to attempt to create a silver mile of 5p coins in support of the school's development fund. Explained organiser Ann Bond: "We wanted to do something to which all our members could contribute, and a silver mile seemed fun and an unusual challenge. In the first three months we raised £1,300 and since then the appeal has been moving slowly but surely towards its target." That goal has now been reached and Ann and her husband Ray returned to Sibford to hand over the cash. Said head Michael Goodwin: "This has been a terrific effort and I'm grateful for, and impressed by, the tenacity of all those who have amassed this considerable sum. The school has exciting plans for the future which include building a brand new hall, which will be used for our regular meetings for worship and for theatrical productions. We are also creating new sports changing facilities and a new staff room, so donations such as this are extremely welcome."
