As school pupils wait anxiously for news of their GCE and GCSE results, five students at Sibford School near Banbury have been given an early reason to celebrate.

Seventeen-year-olds Harry Petrie and Harry Dent and 16-year-old Emily Leonard have been awarded Distinction* in their BTEC First Diploma in Countryside and Environment exam … the equivalent of four GSCEs at A* grade; while Tom Marks (17) received a straight Distinction in the same exam … the equivalent of four GCSEs at A grade.

The BTEC course provides students with a background in working within the Countryside and Environment industries and a growing awareness of conservation and sustainability.

Said tutor Angy Bovill: “We are very fortunate here at Sibford to have our own horticultural department and conservation area within the grounds which means that our students can get some real hands on experience. I am delighted that these four have done so well and wish them all the best for the future.”

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Tom Rogers has joined an elite community of European maths students who have sat -- and passed -- the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad Kangaroo (IMOK).

The two-hour challenge, which encourages and challenges exceptional maths students, is organised by the Paris-based European Kangaroo Foundation -- so named because it was inspired by the Australian Mathematics Trust.

In recognition of his success Tom, who gained a Certificate of Merit, was presented with a special IMOK keyfob which each year features a different mathematical problem for students to solve.
