Milcombe teenager Olivia Fletcher, 14, a pupil at Sibford School near Banbury, was one of just 100 pupils nationwide selected to enjoy a special learning experience at the University of Portsmouth.

Organised by The Smallpeice Trust, an independent charity which promotes engineering as a career, the residential course gave students aged between 13 and 18 the opportunity to tackle real-life challenges designed and facilitated by engineers from Jaguar Land Rover, Lloyd’s Register, The Royal Navy, VT Shipbuilding and the University’s Engineering Department.

Projects included the design and build of a model racing car; creating a barge; and building a wind turbine.

Claire Ford of The Smallpiece Trust said: “These courses offer the chance to demonstrate the diversity of engineering and the career opportunities available. Watching the students tackle real life challenges and seeing them come up with creative solutions is extremely encouraging.”
