SCHOOLBOY TO REPRESENT UK IN EUROPEAN SCIENCE CONTEST
April 2009

An Oxfordshire schoolboy will be heading off to Paris later this year to represent the United Kingdom in the European Union Contest for Young Scientists.
Eighteen-year-old Bobby Tann, a pupil at Sibford School near Banbury, was selected to compete in the EU event after taking part in the British Science Association’s Big Bang Fair, held at the QEII Conference Centre in London last month.
More than 200 students aged between 11 and 19 took part in the Fair … with three being chosen to represent the UK in Europe.
Bobby’s chosen specialism is the effects of isolation on the pollination of a wild plant in cereal fields. He will be joined in Paris by Hannah Stuart from The King’s School, Canterbury and Courtney Williams from William Farr CofE School in Lincoln.
Speaking at the Big Bang, Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Drayson, said: “It is extremely encouraging to see the number of entrants that have taken part in this competition. I really want to bust the myth that science is boring and geeky – it is far from it. This competition has highlighted the reality of science today, it’s exciting and fascinating and shapes all our lives.”
The European Union Contest for Young Scientists, a celebration of the very best of youth science from Europe and supporting countries, takes place at the Palais de La Découverte from September 11 – 16.
Originally launched in Brussels in 1989, this is the first time in the competition’s history that it has taken place in France. Previous locations have included Denmark, Portugal and Russia.
