Working in partnership with Readathon and supported by Connaught Education and children’s newspaper First News, Charley Boorman, President of Dyslexia Action (and former Sibford Scholar) ran a poetry competition that asked children aged 4 – 14 years to write about what reading meant to them; each entry had to start with the words ‘Reading is …’.
The competition was judged by Brough Girling, chairman of Readathon, who picked out the poem by Sibford pupil Brigid Davidson as the overall winner. Said Brough: "I was looking in particular for poems where the personality of the writer comes through – where they are writing what they really feel about reading, and not merely what they think a poem about reading should be like! On this criteria Brigid, who obviously finds reading difficult, is my clear winner.”
As part of the winners’ prizes Charley, who is himself dyslexic, was been filmed reading their poems.
